Kilimanjaro Rongai Route

From $2100 / person

The 6-day Kilimanjaro Rongai route is unique as the only trail that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. Although it has been gaining popularity, the Rongai route still sees relatively low traffic, making it an excellent choice for climbers seeking a quieter, more secluded trek.

It’s especially favored by those looking for an alternative to the busier Marangu route, those who prefer a more remote hiking experience, or those climbing during the rainy season, as the northern side of the mountain typically receives less precipitation.

This route requires a minimum of six days, although a seven-day trek is recommended to allow for better acclimatization. While the Rongai route may not offer the diverse scenery found on some of the western routes. It compensates by taking trekkers through untouched wilderness areas for several days before merging with the Marangu route at Kibo Camp. The descent follows the Marangu route, providing a well-rounded Kilimanjaro experience.

As you ascend, you’ll be treated to increasingly dramatic landscapes. Day 05: Mawenzi Camp - Kibo Camp

Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m/14,200ft) to Kibo Camp (4,750m/15,580ft)
Elevation Gain: 420 meters, 1,380 feet

On this day, you’ll traverse the stark, otherworldly landscape of the “saddle,” a vast, arid plateau that lies between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The hike is less steep than previous days but covers a longer distance across this lunar-like terrain, offering a sense of both awe and anticipation as you approach the final ascent.

As you make your way to Kibo Camp, you’ll notice the landscape becoming increasingly barren, with the surrounding environment taking on a surreal, almost extraterrestrial appearance. The air is thinner, and the temperature drops, reminding you that you’re nearing the summit of Kilimanjaro.

Kibo Camp, your final campsite before the summit push, is situated directly below the towering Kibo cone. From here, you can gaze up at the imposing peak, your ultimate goal now within sight. This is where you’ll rest, rehydrate, and mentally prepare for the challenging summit attempt that lies ahead. The night will be short, as your summit bid typically begins in the early hours before dawn.

Day 06: Kibo Camp - Uhuru Peak - Horombo Hut

Kibo Camp (4,750m/15,580ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,340ft) to Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,200ft)
Elevation Gain: 1,145 meters, 3,760 feet
Elevation Loss: 2,175 meters, 7,140 feet

Around midnight, you’ll embark on the final and most challenging leg of your Kilimanjaro journey. With headlamps lighting the way, the ascent to Uhuru Peak begins in the cold and dark, a steep and relentless climb toward the summit. The trail is arduous and the altitude taxing, but every step brings you closer to the highest point in Africa.

The initial climb to Gilman’s Point, situated on the crater rim, is the most demanding part of the trek. The steep, switchback trail over loose scree and volcanic rock tests your endurance and determination. However, the reward of reaching Gilman’s Point is immense as you catch your first glimpse of the dawn breaking over the horizon.

From Gilman’s Point, the path to Uhuru Peak is a more gradual, albeit still challenging, ascent along the crater rim. The high altitude makes this section feel longer and more tiring than it might otherwise be, but the breathtaking views and the knowledge that the summit is within reach keep you motivated.

After approximately two hours of hiking along the rim, you will arrive at Uhuru Peak, the pinnacle of your journey and the highest point on the African continent. Take time to capture this moment with photos, celebrating the incredible achievement with your guide and fellow climbers.

Following a brief stay at the summit, you’ll begin the long descent to Horombo Hut. The descent is rapid, covering a significant drop in elevation, and offers a stark contrast to the night’s ascent. As you move downward, the air becomes richer with oxygen, and the warmth of lower altitudes provides welcome relief. By the time you reach Horombo Hut, you’ll be ready for a well-earned rest after one of the most exhilarating and challenging experiences of your life.

Day 07: Horombo Hut - Marangu Gate - Arusha

Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,200ft) to Marangu Gate (1,800m/5,905ft)
Elevation Loss: 1,920 meters, 6,295 feet

On your final day on Kilimanjaro, you’ll descend from Horombo Hut after breakfast, embarking on a scenic trek through the lush cloud forests that blanket the lower slopes of the mountain.

This last leg of your journey offers a chance to reflect on the incredible achievement of reaching Uhuru Peak and to enjoy the rich biodiversity of Kilimanjaro’s unique ecosystems.

As you make your way down, be mindful of the trail, as it can be slippery, especially if the forest floor is damp. The descent is significant, and the change in scenery from alpine desert to verdant forest is striking. The sounds of wildlife and the rustling of leaves create a peaceful atmosphere as you conclude your adventure.
